Live Game Thread - Texas

                  (8) Oklahoma State @  (1) Texas (-13)
2:30 P.M., ABC

Half Time Post

The Offense is keeping us in the game. If it weren't for the mishap with Hunter and a couple of blown calls it would be 21-14 Oklahoma State leading. All the Cowboys have to do is limit the amount of big plays Texas has, and they should be fine. We'll let them pass it to the side everytime, just wrap up and do your job. Prediction: First drive of second half decides game. Touchdown, good guys win.

First Break Update

After watching each team's first positions of the game, I'd just like to comment on our punter not flopping. He could have easily done it and got a first down, but I'm glad he didn't. Last night I was watching a high school game, a player touched the kicker as he was turning around, and he layed himself out. Gotta go, game coming back on...be back at halftime possibly.

Brian Orakpo vs. Russell Okung

This is one of the biggest and most intriguing match-ups that we will see on Saturday. Oklahoma State's best offensive lineman, LT Russell Okung (6-5, 300), will be paired up against Texas' best defensive players, Brian Orakpo (6-4, 260).

Even though Okung has the size advantage over Orakpo, Orakpo is very quick and athletic. Okung could have a tough day trying to keep him out of the backfield and away from Robinson.

Another good thing going for Texas' 3-4 defense is that defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has the option to rotate Orakpo from defensive end to linebacker. His speed gives him the ability to cover that space at linebacker and rush the passer at defensive end.

With Orakpo and Kindle on the outside, Robinson will need good blocking in order to get the time he needs and scramble if necessary. It will be key for the Pokes O-line to stop Orakpo if they want to be successful both on the ground and through the air.

Inside the Match-Up: Texas - Rush Offense

Here is our preview for the upcoming game against #1 Texas on Saturday. We'll first take a look at UT's rushing attack and it's effectiveness. First off, lets look at some numbers to see how effective Texas has been running the ball thus far.

All Games: (28th Overall in Nation)
Rushing Attempts/Game -     41.71 (3rd in Big XII)
Rushing Yards/Game -         193.43 (2nd in Big XII)
Yards/Carry -                           4.64 (1st in Big XII)
TDs -                                         21 (2nd in Big XII)

Conference Games Only: (2nd Overall in Big XII)
Rushing Attempts/Game -     40.33 (5th in Big XII)
Rushing Yards/Game -          177.66 (2nd in Big XII)
Yards/Carry -                            4.4 (1st in Big XII)
TDs -                                          11 (1st in Big XII)

The Horns' Backfield:
  1. Colt McCoy (Yes, he is the leading rusher) - 70 carries, 371 yards, 6 TDs
  2. Chris Ogbonnaya - 44 carries, 285 yards, 3 TDS
  3. Vondrell McGee - 57 carries, 243 yards, 1 TD
  4. Cody Johnson - 58 carries, 214 yards, 10 TDs

Now, lets break down what all of these stats mean..

Texas has the #2 overall rushing offense thus far in Big XII play (behind OSU). Even though their rushing stats look very vanilla, they have several threats in the backfield. Colt McCoy is surprisingly their leading rusher, but Ogbonnaya, nevertheless, is a big and physical back. Not only is he a running threat, but he is also one of UT's valuable receivers. His break-out game was against Texas when he ran for 127 yards on 15 carries. He has also had good games against Missouri and Colorado.

Colt McCoy is by far their biggest threat. If he finds an opening, he has the speed to make you pay for it. So far in Big XII play, opposing defenses have contained him well, holding him to only 93 yards in 3 conference games. Our defense was able to contain Chase Daniel, so they shouldn't have a problem with containing McCoy.

Whenever Texas gets in the red-zone, look for #31, Cody Johnson. Johnson is a monster and is a smash-mouth runner. At 5'11'', 255 pounds, he is a bowling ball. Look for him to get the call on and 3rd or 4th downs and short.

Overall, Texas is not as impressive as they were last year on the ground. They have accumulated a total of around 1,350 yards as opposed to Oklahoma State's 2,000 rush yards. However, they have still been averaging about 193 yards per game. As long as the Pokes' D continues to contain the run as they have, they should be fine against an average Texas rushing attack.

ESPN Sports Nation Polls

On ESPN Sports Nation page, there are several polls that are up that I found very interesting. Looks like we are heavy underdogs once again...Clicking on the pictures will enlarge them just in case you have troubles reading them...

Emerging Dez Bryant?

Reaction to: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/big12/0-3-171/Underrated-Bryant-emerging-as-Big-12-s-best-receiver.html

My rant starts with the title...Emerging Dez Bryant? I'd say he emerged last year when he averaged 14.5 yards per catch as a freshmen behind the current CFL player Adarius Bowman.

Second off, the "Four Aces"? I've personally never heard of this before, but I may be wrong. True, Brandon Pettigrew is a big asset to Oklahoma State's offense, but I wouldn't consider him one of Oklahoma State's four biggest weapons. I'd say Keith Toston's 7.5 yard average with 487 yards on 65 attempts and 7 touchdowns outplays Pettigrew's 11 catches for 131 yards and 0 touchdowns.

Also, "His biggest game came against Houston when he produced nine catches for 236 yards and three TDs and also added a 71-yard punt return for another score." I'd say is completely wrong. In his performance against Baylor, he had a career-high 11 receptions for 212 yards and two incredible touchdowns. He also had a punt return for a touchdown that was wiped off by a flag.

Week 9 ABC Coverage Map

Here are the coverage maps for this Saturday's games on ABC at 3:30 PM (ET). I'm loving the coverage for the Pokes!
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?page=coveragemaps2008

Who's Zac Robinson?

Does the Media even know who Zac Robinson is? He is currently 3rd in ESPN's QB rating with a 191.93 rating...only 0.27 points away from Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. He has a 70.1% completion rating, which is extremely high compared to other conferences...6th in the NCAA and 4th in the Big XII. Robinson averages 11.1 yards per attempt, which is 2nd in the NCAA, 0.9 YDS/A short of Tulsa's David Johnson. I'm going on this rant, as during almost every Big XII game, the announcers mention the Big XII quarterbacks, but hardly ever mention Zac. Hopefully after Oklahoma State's game on Saturday against Texas, this will change.

Red Zone Stuggles?

Over the past couple weeks, the Cowboys have been criticized for not putting the ball in the end-zone when deep in their opponent's territory. However, are they really struggling? And if they are, is this something to worry about?

Well, through 7 games this year, the Pokes have had a total of 35 red-zone appearances. Out of those 35 drives, 31 have resulted in points (21 rush TD's, 3 pass TDs, 7 FGs). However, in the last 2 weeks the Cowboys have only scored 4 touchdowns in 8 in red-zone opportunities (one field goal, one missed field goal and 2 failed fourth-down conversions allot for the other 4 attempts).

Now, how big of a problem is this?

Hopefully it won't be a problem at all. With the return of Brandon Pettigrew, Robinson will have another huge play-making target in the end-zone. Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston continue to run the ball well and Bryant is always reliable with the jump-balls.

I think one of the reasons why this has been a problem is because of the offensive approach. The offense has been running the ball 68% of the time on average in the past two weeks. Last week, when the Pokes had the big lead against Baylor, the Bears defense most likely expected the run when the Pokes were driving deep in there territory. Therefore, some of these red-zone stats may be deceiving due to the fact that the run game became less efficient over the courses of these games.

Either way, I still believe Trooper Taylor and Gunter Brewer need to incorporate the pass more often while in the red-zone. Whether its just a simple throw to Pettigrew or a jump-ball to Dez, passing the ball could be more efficient than what has been a much anticipated run.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how efficient our offense is in the red-zone when we play Texas on Saturday...

OSU vs. Iowa State to be Televised on ABC

It was announced today by the Big XII that the Pokes's game versus Iowa State on November 1st will be televised on ABC. The kickoff is set for 2:30 P.M. CT. The Cowboys have now been televised nationally on ABC three out of the last four weeks. Seems like we're finally receiving attention from the media....
