All 6 Basketball Commits Sign

All six of the mens basketball commits signed and faxed in their LOI's today. This has turned in to a great recruiting class for the amount of time given to our new coach. Props to Travis Ford. I am looking forward to 2009...

The six players are:

Karron Johnson (#43 in Rivals Top150)
Roger Franklin (#90)
Raymond Penn (#54)
Fred Gulley
Reger Dowell (#135)
Torin Walker

Basketball Early Signing Day

Well, basketball season is about to start. With new head coach Travis Ford leading the way, the Pokes look to reestablish themselves as legitimate Big XII and national contenders. After a disappointing 2007 season (16-16) under Sean Sutton, things seem to be turning around under a more disciplined coach in Ford.

As for next year; however, Travis Ford has brought in an impressive 2009 recruiting class (ranked #9 by Rivals), getting commits from very talented players in Roger Franklin, Torin Walker, Karron Johnson and Raymond Penn. Ford has actually received signatures from all of the commits except for Karron Johnson and Torin Walker.

The new BCS rankings were just announced on Fox...

1. Alabama
2. Texas Tech
3. Texas
4. Florida
5. Oklahoma

12. Missouri
13. Oklahoma State

I was shocked to see Mizzou ahead of us, considering the records are the same, we beat them, and we actually came out to play against Texas.....

Score At Half -- Red Raiders 28, Cowboys 14

The Poke defense has not played very well thus far and the offense has been a little shaky. The Pokes need to come up with some stops on defense in the second half if they want to win the game.

Dez Bryant has beem held to only one catch for 16 yards so far. However, if Pettigrew didn't interfere with him on the hail mary before half, the stats and the score would look a lot better...

Oklahoma State / Texas Tech Preview

On Saturday, the Pokes will play on of the biggest game in school history, and the same could be said for Texas Tech. With Big XII Championship stakes on the line, both teams are trying to come out with the victory. However, this game could also have BCS implications, considering much talk has been going around about the possibility of  a one-loss Big XII team playing in the National Championship Game.

Oklahoma State Rush Offense v. Texas Tech Defense
With 1,120 yards rushing on the year, Kendall Hunter is 4th in the nation in rushing and will be a key part in the Pokes tomorrow. With at least 90 yards rushing every game this season, Hunter has been able to run all over opposing defenses. He needs to have another big game tomorrow if the Pokes plan on upsetting the #2 Red Raiders. Texas Tech's rush defense has actually been pretty good thus far, holding opposing teams to an average of 99 yards a game. Although, wasn't Texas' run defense ranked #3 in the county two weeks ago when Kendall Hunter ran all over them for 161 yards?

Texas Tech's Offense v. Oklahoma State Defense
The Red Raider's offense has proven to be one of the most elite units in the country. With Heisman contenders in Harrell and Crabtree, TTU is ranked the #1 passing offense and #2 ranked total offense in the country. Averaging over 550 yards on offense per game this season, the Red Raiders have yet to be stopped or even slowed down. The Pokes' defensive unit, led by Orie Lemon and Andre Sexton, will need to put on the same display they did against Texas two weeks ago. A strong pass rush will be a necessity if the Pokes want to stop Harrell's 450-yard passing average. Tight coverage on Crabtree will also be essential in slowing down the Raider offense.

Crabtree v. Bryant
Thus far, both of these receivers have put up freak numbers. Dez's numbers are better; however, Crabtree has made more catches in big games when the team need him most. Crabtree doesn't receive the double or even triple coverage that Dez does though. In the Texas and Mizzou games, opponents put two or three defenders on Dez which basically eliminated his threat from the game. When defenders worry about Bryant too much, other receivers are left wide open. So even if he is covered, the team benefits in the long run. I think Dez will come out today with a huge game against the mediocre TTU secondary. He will also be a huge part on special teams.

All Games G Rec. Yards TD Long YPC YPG
Dez Bryant 9 60 1,054 15 80 17.6 117.1
Michael Crabtree 9 70 921 15 82 13.2 102.3

Ford and the Pokes Begin Exhibition Play, Destroy Rogers State, 112-75

Well the Travis Ford era has begun... Terrell Harris had a freak game almost recording a triple-double with 32 points, 10 rebounds and 7 steals. Harris was on fire hitting 6 of his 8 threes and shooting 11 of 16 inside the arc.

Four other players also had double digits for the Pokes tonight. Keiton Page and James Anderson both recorded 10 pts while Eaton and Muonelo also had 10+ points on the night.

The Cowboys will play their final exhibition game on Saturday against Langston.

OSU Stays at at #9 in BCS, Utah to #8??

I find this ridiculous. Utah, whose strength of schedule doesn't compare to any of the other top 10 teams, moved to the #8 spot after barely beating a mediocre, four-win New Mexico team, 13-10 on Saturday. I think it is absurd how Utah moved up 2 spots while we stayed at #9, regardless of their undefeated record. I mean, really, look at their schedule... I guess the 59-17 display we put on against ISU Saturday meant nothing to the pollers. They were more content with a 13-10 Utah win over New Mexico...

Utah's Schedule:
OPPONENTW-L (CONF)RESULT
8/30Michigan1-0 (0-0)W 25-23
9/06UNLV2-0 (1-0)W 42-21

... Who have they beaten?

Pokes Move to #8 in AP Poll

After a 59-17 win over Iowa State this weekend, the Oklahoma State Cowboys moved to #8 in the AP poll. They took Georgia's spot after the Bulldogs got smothered by Florida on national television. Other notable changes include Texas Tech moving to #2 and Texas to #5 after the Red Raiders huge upset over the Longhorns last night. Alabama took over the #1 spot, Penn State stayed at #3 and Florida took the #4 slot.

Oklahoma State / Texas Tech Game Time Announced

It has been announced today by the Big XII that the OSU / TTU game will have a 7:00 PM kickoff time and will be televised on ABC. This will be the fourth time in the last five weeks that the Pokes play on national television.

Pokes Unleash on Iowa State, 59-17

It was a long day for the Iowa State defense. After a slow start, the Pokes finally developed their passing game and began to take advantage of the young ISU secondary.

The offense had a field day on Iowa State's defense after what felt like a slow first quarter. With almost 700 yards of total offense (263 rushing/419 passing), the Cowboys were able to rack up a season-high 59 points. Zac Robinson had, by far, his best game of the season throwing for 395 yards along with 5 TDs and and interception.

Dez Bryant had another career day as he recorded 171 receiving yards along with a career high, 4 receiving TDs. He had huge touchdowns of 1, 11, 26 and 80 yards. On every TD pass, Bryant made some kind of acrobatic leap to reel the ball in. Bryant is now tied with former Oklahoma State receiver ReShaun Woods for second most touchdowns recorded in school history. His 15 touchdowns puts him 2 behind ReShaun Woods' 17 which he recorded in 2002.

Wide receiver Jeremy Broadway, who only had one reception before today's game, had a 95-yard touchdown reception which set a record for the longest pass play from the line of scrimmage.  Another good sign for Poke fans transpired when Artell Woods, who hadn't recorded a catch since 2006, caught a 7-yard pass from Alex Cate late in the fourth quarter. After recovering from a severe back injury that could have ended his football career, it was very uplifting to see Woods back on the field making plays.

Kendall Hunter had another strong game on the ground, rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries. Not only was Hunter a big factor on the ground but so were Toston and Robinson. Robinson had 11 carries for 66 yards and Toston had 5 carries for 48 yards.

As for the Pokes' defense, the defensive line and secondary had another solid game. They allowed only 122 yards rushing on 38 attempts (3.8 avg) and 240 yards through the air. They were pressuring and hitting ISU's QB, Austen Arnaud all game, leading to inaccurate passes, a sack and two interceptions.

The Pokes are now 8-1 for only the 3rd time in history and will head in to Lubbock next weekend for what will, arguably, be the biggest game in OSU history.

Inside the Match-Up: Iowa State

 vs.

After coming up just short against Texas last weekend, the Pokes are looking to redeem themselves tomorrow against the Iowa State Cyclones.

The Cyclones (2-6), have been struggling this season, especially on defense. They are allowing an average of 423 yards per game for an average of 32 points per game. Their secondary has been a nightmare of all sorts allowing an average of 329 yards per game. Last week against Texas A&M, ISU's defense gave up 381 yards passing and 128 yards rushing for a total of 509 yards.

The Cyclones' run defense has also been very inconsistent. Ranked #87 in the nation, Iowa State has allowed 170 yards per game on the ground. This area does not match up well with Pokes' Kendall Hunter, who enters the game with almost 1,100 yards and 10 TDs. Keith Toston and Zac Robinson are also threats in the backfield and I'm sure they will have their fair share of carries.

As for ISU's offense, they are led by sophomore quarterback Austen Arnaud, who has thrown for 1,571 yards with 9 TDs and 4 interceptions so far this year. The Cyclone's offense is averaging 361 yards per game for an average of 26 points per game.

Overall, this has not been the year for Iowa State. Not to mention they have lost their last 14 games on the road and their last 33 games against ranked opponents during the regular season. This game is key for the Pokes, as they will try and carry some momentum in to next week's game against Texas Tech. If TTU were to pull off the upset, the Cowboys will have a huge game awaiting them in Lubbock next weekend.

Daytawion Lowe Commits to Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State coaching staff just pulled in another huge commitment today. Daytawion Lowe, a 4-star safety from Midwest City (Carl Albert), just announced at a press conference held at his high school that he is commited to Oklahoma State. At 6'1", 190 pounds, Lowe is a great defensive player, receiver and is also phenomenal on special teams.

Daytawion Lowe to Make Commit Announcement at Noon

It has been reported that Carl Albert High School's prospect Daytawion Lowe will make his commit announcement at around noon today. Lowe, a four-star safety (#17 position ranking) from Midwest City, has been recruited by other schools like Pittsburgh, Missouri, TTU, and Nebraska but has had Oklahoma State on top of his list for a while now. This would be a huge addition to the current recruiting class if Lowe decides to commit to the Pokes. With the departures of Ricky Price and Jacob Lacey at the end of the year, Lowe could possibly fill a starting role in '09.

Pokes Get Commit from Local LB

Colt Richardson, a two-star (Rivals) recruiting prospect from Ada, has decided to commit to Oklahoma State this weekend. At 6-4, 225 pounds, Richardson will add some depth at the linebacker spot. This is only the 6th commit the Pokes have gotten this year. If the Cowboys continue to succeed, expect more prospects to come.

Daddy Boone Donates Another $63 Million

After much talk circulating over the huge hit Pickens' BP Capital Energy Fund has taken in recent months, Boone Pickens has decided "...to put to rest the rumors out there which 99% are false." Pickens, who's $165 million donation in early '06 was the largest contribution ever made to an athletic program,  has donated another $63 million in order to finish the remaining construction on the newly renovated stadium. However, the other athletic projects Pickens had planned on funding have been put on hold. He also said that he would return the remaining $125 million from last years donation back into the Athletic Department's fund.

Over a two and a half year period, Pickens' donations in the fund had reached a high of $407 million; however, shrank to $125 million after the ongoing economic downturn. Pickens will no longer manage the money he donates to the program.

Pokes Unable to Pull Off the Upset, Fall to #1 Texas

The Pokes were unable to pull of the victory last night to upset No. 1 Texas. Late in the game, Zac Robinson and the offense narrowed the UT lead to only 4 after the Pokes down by what was a 14-point deficit. However, they were unable to capatizilize on a crucial 4th and 6 with 2:39 remaining. The Cowboys had one last shot at the endzone at the end of the game but Robinson was unable to pull off the Flutie Miracle.

The Cowboys were playing well all game but certain mistakes costed them the game. On their second possession, after a 52-yard kick-off return by Victor Johnson, Kendall Hunter fumbled on what was going to be an easy TD if he held on to the ball. The Longhorns were able to take advantage of the mistake and drive down the field 91-yards to take a 14-0 lead. Later in the second quarter, McCoy threw a pass that was intercepted around the Cowboys 10-yard line. However, the play was called back after Andre Sexton was flagged for roughing the passer. This costly penalty led to a UT touchdown. The score at half was 21-14.

In the third quarter when the score was 28-21 in favor of Texas, Colt McCoy was intercepted by Jacob Lacey. The Cowboys were able to drive all the way down the field but were held to just a 39-yard field goal by Dan Bailey.

On the ensuing UT drive, the Longhorns drove all the way down the field once again. When at the OSU 6-yard line, McCoy tried to take it in to the end-zone himself and seal the deal. However, he fumbled after he was hit by Orie Lemon, giving the Pokes another shot at a late comeback.

The game basically came down to a 4th and 6 on the OSU 30. The Cowboys were unable to convert after what I thought was a terrible play call. It was a screen pass to Dez that only went for 2-yards. I really dont know what Gundy or the offensive coordinators were thinking, but it was an ugly play and it was one of many plays that costed OSU the game.

Postgame will come soon... But this is all I have to say for now.

                  (8) Oklahoma State @  (1) Texas (-13)

Half Time Post

The Offense is keeping us in the game. If it weren't for the mishap with Hunter and a couple of blown calls it would be 21-14 Oklahoma State leading. All the Cowboys have to do is limit the amount of big plays Texas has, and they should be fine. We'll let them pass it to the side everytime, just wrap up and do your job. Prediction: First drive of second half decides game. Touchdown, good guys win.

First Break Update

After watching each team's first positions of the game, I'd just like to comment on our punter not flopping. He could have easily done it and got a first down, but I'm glad he didn't. Last night I was watching a high school game, a player touched the kicker as he was turning around, and he layed himself out. Gotta go, game coming back on...be back at halftime possibly.

Brian Orakpo vs. Russell Okung

This is one of the biggest and most intriguing match-ups that we will see on Saturday. Oklahoma State's best offensive lineman, LT Russell Okung (6-5, 300), will be paired up against Texas' best defensive players, Brian Orakpo (6-4, 260).

Even though Okung has the size advantage over Orakpo, Orakpo is very quick and athletic. Okung could have a tough day trying to keep him out of the backfield and away from Robinson.

Another good thing going for Texas' 3-4 defense is that defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has the option to rotate Orakpo from defensive end to linebacker. His speed gives him the ability to cover that space at linebacker and rush the passer at defensive end.

With Orakpo and Kindle on the outside, Robinson will need good blocking in order to get the time he needs and scramble if necessary. It will be key for the Pokes O-line to stop Orakpo if they want to be successful both on the ground and through the air.

Inside the Match-Up: Texas - Rush Offense

Here is our preview for the upcoming game against #1 Texas on Saturday. We'll first take a look at UT's rushing attack and it's effectiveness. First off, lets look at some numbers to see how effective Texas has been running the ball thus far.

All Games: (28th Overall in Nation)
Rushing Attempts/Game -     41.71 (3rd in Big XII)
Rushing Yards/Game -         193.43 (2nd in Big XII)
Yards/Carry -                           4.64 (1st in Big XII)
TDs -                                         21 (2nd in Big XII)

Conference Games Only: (2nd Overall in Big XII)
Rushing Attempts/Game -     40.33 (5th in Big XII)
Rushing Yards/Game -          177.66 (2nd in Big XII)
Yards/Carry -                            4.4 (1st in Big XII)
TDs -                                          11 (1st in Big XII)

The Horns' Backfield:
  1. Colt McCoy (Yes, he is the leading rusher) - 70 carries, 371 yards, 6 TDs
  2. Chris Ogbonnaya - 44 carries, 285 yards, 3 TDS
  3. Vondrell McGee - 57 carries, 243 yards, 1 TD
  4. Cody Johnson - 58 carries, 214 yards, 10 TDs

Now, lets break down what all of these stats mean..

Texas has the #2 overall rushing offense thus far in Big XII play (behind OSU). Even though their rushing stats look very vanilla, they have several threats in the backfield. Colt McCoy is surprisingly their leading rusher, but Ogbonnaya, nevertheless, is a big and physical back. Not only is he a running threat, but he is also one of UT's valuable receivers. His break-out game was against Texas when he ran for 127 yards on 15 carries. He has also had good games against Missouri and Colorado.

Colt McCoy is by far their biggest threat. If he finds an opening, he has the speed to make you pay for it. So far in Big XII play, opposing defenses have contained him well, holding him to only 93 yards in 3 conference games. Our defense was able to contain Chase Daniel, so they shouldn't have a problem with containing McCoy.

Whenever Texas gets in the red-zone, look for #31, Cody Johnson. Johnson is a monster and is a smash-mouth runner. At 5'11'', 255 pounds, he is a bowling ball. Look for him to get the call on and 3rd or 4th downs and short.

Overall, Texas is not as impressive as they were last year on the ground. They have accumulated a total of around 1,350 yards as opposed to Oklahoma State's 2,000 rush yards. However, they have still been averaging about 193 yards per game. As long as the Pokes' D continues to contain the run as they have, they should be fine against an average Texas rushing attack.

ESPN Sports Nation Polls

On ESPN Sports Nation page, there are several polls that are up that I found very interesting. Looks like we are heavy underdogs once again...Clicking on the pictures will enlarge them just in case you have troubles reading them...

Emerging Dez Bryant?

Reaction to: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/big12/0-3-171/Underrated-Bryant-emerging-as-Big-12-s-best-receiver.html

My rant starts with the title...Emerging Dez Bryant? I'd say he emerged last year when he averaged 14.5 yards per catch as a freshmen behind the current CFL player Adarius Bowman.

Second off, the "Four Aces"? I've personally never heard of this before, but I may be wrong. True, Brandon Pettigrew is a big asset to Oklahoma State's offense, but I wouldn't consider him one of Oklahoma State's four biggest weapons. I'd say Keith Toston's 7.5 yard average with 487 yards on 65 attempts and 7 touchdowns outplays Pettigrew's 11 catches for 131 yards and 0 touchdowns.

Also, "His biggest game came against Houston when he produced nine catches for 236 yards and three TDs and also added a 71-yard punt return for another score." I'd say is completely wrong. In his performance against Baylor, he had a career-high 11 receptions for 212 yards and two incredible touchdowns. He also had a punt return for a touchdown that was wiped off by a flag.

Week 9 ABC Coverage Map

Here are the coverage maps for this Saturday's games on ABC at 3:30 PM (ET). I'm loving the coverage for the Pokes!
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?page=coveragemaps2008

Who's Zac Robinson?

Does the Media even know who Zac Robinson is? He is currently 3rd in ESPN's QB rating with a 191.93 rating...only 0.27 points away from Oklahoma's Sam Bradford. He has a 70.1% completion rating, which is extremely high compared to other conferences...6th in the NCAA and 4th in the Big XII. Robinson averages 11.1 yards per attempt, which is 2nd in the NCAA, 0.9 YDS/A short of Tulsa's David Johnson. I'm going on this rant, as during almost every Big XII game, the announcers mention the Big XII quarterbacks, but hardly ever mention Zac. Hopefully after Oklahoma State's game on Saturday against Texas, this will change.

Red Zone Stuggles?

Over the past couple weeks, the Cowboys have been criticized for not putting the ball in the end-zone when deep in their opponent's territory. However, are they really struggling? And if they are, is this something to worry about?

Well, through 7 games this year, the Pokes have had a total of 35 red-zone appearances. Out of those 35 drives, 31 have resulted in points (21 rush TD's, 3 pass TDs, 7 FGs). However, in the last 2 weeks the Cowboys have only scored 4 touchdowns in 8 in red-zone opportunities (one field goal, one missed field goal and 2 failed fourth-down conversions allot for the other 4 attempts).

Now, how big of a problem is this?

Hopefully it won't be a problem at all. With the return of Brandon Pettigrew, Robinson will have another huge play-making target in the end-zone. Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston continue to run the ball well and Bryant is always reliable with the jump-balls.

I think one of the reasons why this has been a problem is because of the offensive approach. The offense has been running the ball 68% of the time on average in the past two weeks. Last week, when the Pokes had the big lead against Baylor, the Bears defense most likely expected the run when the Pokes were driving deep in there territory. Therefore, some of these red-zone stats may be deceiving due to the fact that the run game became less efficient over the courses of these games.

Either way, I still believe Trooper Taylor and Gunter Brewer need to incorporate the pass more often while in the red-zone. Whether its just a simple throw to Pettigrew or a jump-ball to Dez, passing the ball could be more efficient than what has been a much anticipated run.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how efficient our offense is in the red-zone when we play Texas on Saturday...
